Isaiah 50

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Listen. God is talking. He is talking to His people.

His people had been sad. Very sad. They said, "God has forgotten us!"

But God said, "No. I have not forgotten you. I am still strong. Look what I can do!"

And then God showed how strong He is. He can dry up the sea! All the water, gone. He can make the sky dark, very dark, like a big black blanket.

God is very, very strong. Nobody is stronger than God.

Then someone else starts to talk. A special helper from God. He says, "Every morning, God wakes me up. God whispers in my ear. And I listen."

This helper wants to help tired people. When someone is sad, he speaks kind words. Soft, good words.

But not everyone likes the helper. Some people hurt him. They hit his back. They pulled his beard. They spit on his face. That is very mean. Very sad.

But the helper did not run away. He was brave. He stayed. Because he knew: God is with me. God will help me.

What Does This Mean?

God is strong. And God speaks. Every morning, God speaks.

Even when it is dark and scary, God is there. Even when people are mean, God helps.

The helper listened well. He was brave, because God was with him.

The Common Thread

Do you know who that helper is? That helper is Jesus!

Jesus came later. And people were mean to Jesus too. They hit Him. They spit on Him. They laughed at Him.

But Jesus did not run away. Jesus stayed. Because Jesus loved us so much. So very, very much.

Jesus listened to His Father every morning. And Jesus knew: My Father helps me.

Isaiah wrote this a long, long time before Jesus came. But he already knew a little bit. God whispered it in his ear.

For You

Sometimes it is dark. Maybe in your room at night. Or in your heart when you are sad.

Then you can do what the helper did. You can listen. God speaks in the Bible. Mommy or daddy reads it. And you listen.

And God says: "I am here. I am strong. I help you."

In the morning, when you wake up, you can whisper, "Good morning, God." Because God is already there. God has been awake all night.

You can be brave, like Jesus. Because God is close.

Talk About It

What do you do when you are scared in the dark? Who can help you?

Jesus was brave, even when people were mean. Can you think of a moment when you needed to be brave?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank You that You are strong. Thank You that You are here in the morning. Thank You that You are here at night. Thank You for Jesus, who was so brave. Please help me when I am scared. Please help me to listen to You.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 10

Notice who is walking in darkness here. Not the rebel. It is the one who "fears Yahweh and obeys the voice of his servant." Obedience did not turn the lights on. So when you cannot see the next step, don't read it as proof God left. "Let him trust in Yahweh's name." Holding a name in the dark is still holding on.
