Jonah 1
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Listen. I will tell you a story. A story about a man named Jonah.
Jonah lived long ago. One day God spoke to him. God said, "Jonah, go to the big city. The city is called Nineveh. The people there do bad things. Tell them to stop."
But Jonah did not want to go. No. Jonah did not want to.
So Jonah ran away. He walked to the sea. He saw a big boat. The boat was going far, far away. The other way. Away from Nineveh. Jonah paid some money. He stepped onto the boat. And he sailed away.
Jonah thought, "Now God cannot find me." Jonah went down into the boat. He lay down. And he fell fast asleep.
But God saw Jonah. God always sees.
God sent a big wind. Whoosh! The wind blew hard. The waves grew tall. Very tall. The boat went up. The boat went down. The sailors were scared. Very scared! They shouted, "The boat is going to break!"
The sailors woke Jonah up. "Wake up! Pray to your God!"
Jonah looked at the wind. Jonah looked at the waves. And Jonah said, "It is my fault. I ran away from God. Throw me in the sea. Then the wind will stop."
The sailors did not want to. But the waves grew bigger and bigger. So they lifted Jonah up. And splash! Into the sea.
And then… the wind stopped. The waves became quiet. Everything was still.
But what about Jonah? Jonah went deep, deep into the water. Then God sent a very big fish. A huge fish! The fish opened its mouth wide. And gulp! The fish swallowed Jonah whole. Jonah was safe inside the fish. Three days and three nights.
What Does This Mean?
You cannot run away from God. Jonah tried. He went far away on a boat. He hid down deep. But God saw him. God always sees Jonah. And God still loved him.
The Common Thread
God did not forget Jonah in the sea. God sent a big fish to save him. God loves to save people who are lost.
Later, another Man came. His name is Jesus. Jesus was in a boat too, in a big storm. Jesus said, "Stop!" And the wind and waves listened. Jesus saves people too. That is what Jesus loves to do.
For You
Sometimes you do not want to listen. Maybe Mama says, "Come here." And you run the other way. That happens.
But God still loves you. Always. You can say, "Sorry, God." And God hears you. Even in a boat. Even in the sea. Even in your bed at night. God hears.

Dear God,

What have you done?" The sailors ask it, not God. Pagan men, terrified of a God they barely know, while the prophet who knows His name sleeps below deck. Jonah had told them everything. He could explain his God fluently and still be running from Him. Knowing the truth is not the same as trembling before it. Which are you closer to tonight, the prophet or the sailors?
I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land." Perfect theology, spoken by a man on a boat running from that same God. He knew the sea belonged to Yahweh, and still booked passage across it. What do you confess with your mouth while your feet head the other way?
Pagan sailors, rowing until their arms burned, trying to save the one man whose disobedience had put them all in danger. "They could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them." The prophet slept while strangers fought for his life. Ask yourself honestly: who has been rowing for you lately, and did you even notice?
The sailors fire off question after question: "What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?" Pagan strangers forcing a runaway prophet to say out loud who he is. Sometimes God uses people outside your faith to ask the question you have been avoiding. Who are you, really, when the storm strips away the story you have been telling yourself?
