The Explanation
Do you remember Jonah? Jonah ran away from God. He got on a big boat. There came a huge storm. And splash, Jonah fell into the sea.
The waves were high. The water was cold. Jonah went down, down, down. Deeper and deeper. It was dark. Very dark.
But God saw Jonah. God sent a very big fish. The fish opened his mouth wide. And gulp, Jonah was inside the fish!
It was dark in the belly of the fish. And wet. And it smelled like fish. Yuck. Jonah sat there. One day. Two days. Three whole days.
And then Jonah began to pray. He folded his hands, deep inside that fish. Jonah said, "God, I was so scared. The water was all around me. Seaweed was around my head. I sank down deep. But You heard me, God. You saved me."
Jonah cried. And Jonah said thank you. "Thank you, God. You are so good. You did not forget me."
And do you know what God did? God spoke to the fish. And the fish swam to the beach. Then the fish opened his mouth. Blegh! Jonah lay on the sand. Safe. Alive. In the warm sun again.
What Does This Mean?
Jonah thought no one could see him. Not up in the storm. Not down deep in the sea. Not inside a dark fish belly.
But God saw Jonah. God always saw Jonah. Even in the very darkest place.
Jonah said sorry. And God listened. God always listens.
The Common Thread
Jonah was three days in the fish. Then he came out. Alive!
Later, Jesus came. Jesus was three days in a grave. Deep in the dark. And then, on the third day, Jesus came out. Alive!
Jesus said, "Look at Jonah. That is a little bit like me."
God is stronger than the dark. God is stronger than the deep water. God is even stronger than death.
For You
Are you ever in the dark? Under your blanket at night? In your room with the lights off?
You can pray, just like Jonah. You do not have to speak loud. God hears you always. Even when you whisper. Even when you only think it.
God sees you. In the light and in the dark. God never forgets you.

Dear God,
Thank you that You saw Jonah. Thank you that You see me too. When it is dark, You are there. When I am scared, You hear me. Thank you, God.

Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy." Jonah says this from inside a fish, in the dark, after running. He is describing himself. Whatever you chase instead of God does not just waste your time, it talks you out of the kindness waiting for you. What have you let go of lately without noticing?
He didn't pray on the ship. The sailors cried out while Jonah slept below deck, and even when they woke him he gave a speech instead of a prayer. Only in the dark, in the belly, does he finally speak: "Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish's belly." Notice, still his God. Running never changed that. What is it going to take before you talk to Him?
I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'" Notice he does not wait to feel close before he looks. Seaweed around his head, no light, no way out, and still he turns his face toward God. Where do you look when you are the one who ran? Look anyway. That "yet" is where prayer begins.
Notice when Jonah finally turns: "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh." Not on the ship. Not in the water. At the point of fainting. And from the belly of a fish, his prayer still reached the temple. Nowhere is too far down for your voice to travel. What are you waiting to faint before you say?
