Nehemiah 4
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
Listen. Long, long ago there was a big city. The city was called Jerusalem. But something sad had happened. The wall around the city was broken. All the stones lay on the ground.
A man named Nehemiah said: "We are going to build. We are going to build a big, strong wall!" And everyone helped. They picked up stones. Heavy stones. They stacked them, one on top of the other. Higher and higher.
But not everyone was happy. There were mean men nearby. They laughed. "Ha ha, look at them building! That wall will fall right over!" They wanted to come and fight.
Nehemiah heard it. He was a little scared. But do you know what he did first? He prayed. He talked to God. "God, please help us."
And then Nehemiah said something smart. "Each of you, grab a sword. Keep it right next to you. And keep on building!" So they did. In one hand a stone. In the other hand a sword. They kept watch. And they kept on building.
The mean men came to look. But they saw the strong men, and the swords. And they went away. God took care of His people. The wall grew taller and taller.
What Does This Mean?
Nehemiah was afraid. But he did not run away. First he prayed. Then he went on. God heard him. God helped him.
Sometimes something is hard. Sometimes something is scary. Then you may pray too. God listens. Always.
The Common Thread
God loves His city. God loves His people. Later, much later, Jesus came. Jesus also came to Jerusalem. Jesus builds too. Not with stones. Jesus builds with people. With big people, and with little people. With you.
Jesus is strong. Stronger than every mean man. Jesus watches over you, day and night.
For You
Do you know what is fun to do? Build with blocks. Stack them, one on top of the other. Higher and higher. And if it falls? Then you start again.
Nehemiah did not give up. You do not have to give up either. If something is hard, you can pray. Just say: "God, help me." God hears you. Every time.
And are you afraid sometimes? In the dark? Or of a loud noise? Then you can whisper it to God. God is near you. Very near.

Tobiah's jab was almost funny: "What they are building, if a fox climbed up it, he would break down their stone wall." Not a sword, just a sneer. And sneers land, because they say your work is too small to matter. Fifty two days later that wall stood. What half built thing in your life are you tempted to abandon because someone laughed?
Notice who brought the fear: not the enemy, but their own relatives, and they said it "ten times." The wall wasn't threatened by swords first, it was threatened by repetition. Some voices in your life don't attack you, they just wear you down by saying the same discouraging thing again and again. Count how often you listen.
Everyone with one of his hands did the work, and with the other held his weapon." No one had the luxury of two free hands. The wall still went up, stone by stone, with half the strength they wished they had. Maybe your work feels like that today. Guarding and building at once. It counts. God builds through tired, half occupied hands.
Nehemiah tells them, "Let everyone with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and may labor in the day." No going home to a comfortable bed. They slept inside the half built wall they were still repairing. Where has God asked you to stay when you would rather commute in and out? Some work only gets done by those who live there.
