Numbers 3

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

In the desert stood a big tent. A special tent, for God.

Not everyone could work in that tent. God picked one family. The family of Levi.

There were three groups of Levi's family. Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Each group got its own job.

Some carried the soft cloths of the tent. Some carried the golden table. Some carried the big wooden boards. Heavy work. Careful work.

Around the tent they set up camp. One family here. One family there. Right in front, close to the door, slept Moses and Aaron. Watching. Guarding.

Because the tent was special. Very special. No stranger could just walk up to it.

What Does This Mean?

God counted the Levites. Every little boy, from one month old. He wrote down how many there were.

Twenty two thousand boys. That is a lot of boys.

God said, "The Levites are mine." Just like that. Simple and clear.

Why? Because long ago, in Egypt, God had saved the first baby boys of Israel. So now those first boys belonged to God. But God said, "Give me the Levites instead." Like a trade.

Do you know what a trade is? You give one thing, and get something back. God traded the Levites, so the other families could stay home.

The Common Thread

God always wanted to live close to His people. That is why the tent was there. That is why the Levites carried it, every time the people moved. So God could move with them.

Later, God did something even bigger. He did not stay in a tent anymore. He sent Jesus. Jesus came to live right in the middle of people. Close. Very close.

The tent needed guards, so no stranger could come near. But Jesus opened the way. Now everyone may come close to God. Even you.

For You

Think of your own house. Does everyone have a job? Someone sets the table. Someone else feeds the cat.

In the desert, everyone had a job too. Carrying poles. Carrying cloth. Watching the door.

God still gives people work today. Little work, and big work. And He sees every bit of it.

What job could you do today, to help at home?

Talk About It

Why did the Levites belong to God in a special way?

What job would you like to have carrying the tent, if you lived in the desert?

Praying Together

Dear God, Thank You for wanting to live close to us. Thank You for Jesus, who opened the way. Help me to help at home today. Amen.
