Proverbs 15

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-5)

Bible

The Explanation

Once there were two brothers. One brother yelled loud. The other brother spoke soft.

One day, the loud brother took a toy. He grabbed it fast. He did not ask.

The other brother felt sad. His face got hot. He wanted to yell too.

But he took a breath. A slow breath. Then he said soft words.

"Please give it back." Just like that. Soft and small.

And guess what happened? The loud brother stopped. His angry face got quiet. He gave the toy back.

A soft word can do that. It can turn big anger into calm. The Bible says so. A gentle answer turns away wrath.

What Does This Mean?

Soft words are strong, even though they sound small. Harsh words make more anger come out. Like poking a hornet nest.

But soft words are like water on a fire. They make the mad feeling go away.

God sees all of this. He watches the good and the bad. Nothing is too small for Him to see.

He sees when you are soft. He sees when you shout too.

The Common Thread

God does not just watch from far away. He listens too. He hears prayers.

When you talk to Him, He leans in close. He is not far from you.

Jesus spoke this way. Soft words. Kind words. Even when people were mean to Him.

He never yelled back in anger. He stayed gentle. That is what God is like.

For You

Think of a time someone took your toy. Or pushed you. Or said something mean.

What did your mouth want to say? Loud words? Mad words?

Try this instead. Take a breath, slow and deep. Then speak soft.

"Please stop." Or "That hurts my feelings." Soft words, small and true.

Watch what happens to the mad face in front of you. It might get calm, just like that.

A glad heart makes your own face happy too. Did you know that? When your heart feels good inside, your whole face shines.

So let your heart be glad. Tell God thank you. Tell Him when you are sad too. He hears you. Every single time.

Talk About It

When someone is mean to you, what soft words could you say back?

Can you think of something that makes your heart feel glad today?

Praying Together

Dear God, thank You for watching me. Thank You for listening too.

Help my words be soft today. Even when I feel mad inside.

Make my heart glad, like Your Word says. Thank You for hearing me, always.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Notice it still says answer. Gentleness isn't silence or dodging the conflict. You speak, you just refuse to hand back the heat you were given. That costs something. Someone has to absorb the fire so it stops spreading, and today that someone might be you.
