Proverbs 2
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
A father sat with his son. Close, very close. He had something important to say.
"My son," he said. "Listen to my words."
The boy looked up. His eyes were big.
"Words are like treasure," said the father. "Hide them in your heart."
The boy did not understand yet. So the father told him more.
"Look for wisdom," he said. "Look hard. Like looking for silver. Like digging for treasure in the ground."
The boy liked treasure. He liked shiny things.
"If you look for wisdom," said the father, "you will find something even better. You will find God."
What Does This Mean?
God gives wisdom. It comes out of his mouth, like warm bread comes out of an oven.
Wisdom is knowing what is good. It is a shield. It keeps you safe, like a big shield keeps an arrow away.
There are bad paths too. Dark paths. On those paths walk people who like to do wrong things. Their paths are crooked, like a wiggly line, not straight.
Wisdom keeps you off those paths. It watches over you like a mother watching her child near water.
The Common Thread
God is the one who gives wisdom. It does not grow on trees. It does not fall from the sky by itself. It comes from him, out of his mouth.
Later, God sent his own Son, Jesus. Jesus is full of wisdom too. When you listen to Jesus, you are listening to God's own words, just like the boy listened to his father.
God has always wanted his children close. Close enough to hear him. Close enough to receive his words, like treasure poured into open hands.

Do you like treasure hunts? Looking under rocks, digging in the sand?
God's words are like that. Hidden treasure, worth searching for.
You can search too. When someone reads you a Bible story, that is you searching. When you say a little prayer, that is you calling out, just like the boy called out for understanding.
God hears you. And he gives wisdom to those who ask, generously, like pouring water into a cup until it is full.
Walk on the good path today. The straight path. The path with God's light on it.
