Psalms 147

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-5)

Bible

The Explanation

Close your eyes for a moment. Can you feel the wind? God made that wind.

Look up. So many stars tonight. Twinkling, tiny lights. Did you know God knows every single star? He calls each one by its own name. Like He calls you by your name.

God is very big. Very, very strong. But listen to this. God also looks at small things. He looks at a heart that is sad. A heart that hurts inside. God comes close. He heals it, softly, like a bandage on a hurt knee.

What Does This Mean?

God takes care of birds too. Little ravens, calling out loud. Caw, caw, caw! Are they hungry? God hears them. He gives them food.

God makes the clouds. He sends the rain, drip, drip, drip, onto the ground. Then the grass grows green on the mountains. God sends snow too, soft and white like wool. And frost, sparkly like little ashes on the grass.

God does not look at how strong a horse is. He does not look at strong legs or big muscles. No. God looks at hearts. Hearts that love Him. Hearts that trust Him.

The Common Thread

God spoke His words to His people. Long ago. He told them how to live, how to love Him. Not every people got these words. But Israel did. That was special.

And later, God sent something even better than words on a page. He sent Jesus. Jesus is God's Word, come to live among us. Jesus healed hurting hearts too, just like the psalm says. Jesus touched sick people. He was kind to sad people. Jesus is God, come close.

For You

Do you know what you can do, just like the psalm says? You can sing! Sing loud, sing soft, sing to God.

Tonight, when it is dark, look up at the stars again. Whisper, "God knows every one." Then whisper something else. "God knows me too."

Is your heart ever sad? Maybe you fell down. Maybe someone was not kind to you. God sees that. He comes close to hearts like yours. He wants to make them better.

Talk About It

Can you count how many stars you see tonight? Do you think God can count them all?

What is your favorite sound that God made? A bird? Rain? The wind?

Praying Together

Dear God, You know every star. You know my name too. Thank You for the rain, and the birds, and the snow like wool. When my heart feels sad, please come close. I love singing to You. Amen.
