Song of Solomon 3
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
It was night. The stars were shining. In her bed lay a girl. She was thinking about the boy she loved so much. Her heart was full.
But she could not find him. Where was he? She wanted to see him so badly. So she got up. Softly, softly, out into the street.
The city was dark and quiet. She walked and looked. She asked the guards, "Have you seen him? The boy I love?" The guards did not know.
She walked a little further. And then… then she saw him! Her boy! She was so happy. She held him tight. She did not want to let him go anymore.
And then, look! There came something beautiful. A big golden bed. It was moving through the desert. Sixty strong men walked around it. They had swords. They kept watch.
On the bed sat the king. King Solomon. He wore a crown. His mother had put it on his head. It was a wedding day. The king was so happy. His heart sang.
What Does This Mean?
This chapter is about looking. And about finding. The girl looked and looked. And then she was happy. Very happy.
It is about a wedding too. A big party. With a king. And music. And a crown.
The Common Thread
Did you know God is like that too? God loves people so much. He wants to be close to them. Just like the girl and the boy in the story.
And one day, Jesus came. Jesus is like a king. A king who loves us. The Bible says: one day there will be a big party. The biggest party ever. Jesus is happy then. And we are happy too. Just like at a wedding.
When you look for God, you can find Him. He is not far away. He listens when you talk to Him.
For You
Have you ever lost something? Maybe your bear. Or your blanket. You looked and looked. And when you found it, you were so happy!
That is how it is with God too. You may look for Him. You may talk to Him. And He is there. Always.
You can say, "God, are You there?" And He hears you. Every time.
Today you can whisper to God. Just before you go to sleep. Or when you eat. God likes that so much.
Talk About It
Have you ever lost something? How did you feel when you found it again?
A king came in the story on a big golden bed. What would you do if you saw a king?
Praying Together
Dear God,
Thank You that You are there. Thank You that I can find You. Even when it is dark. You hear me. You love me.
Amen.

What others discovered
She asked the watchmen and got nothing back. Then, "I had scarcely passed from them, when I found him whom my soul loves." The finding came just past the place where help failed her. And notice what she does: no casual greeting. "I held him, and would not let him go." When did you last hold on like that?
He made its pillars of silver, its bottom of gold, its seat of purple, the middle of it being paved with love, from the daughters of Jerusalem.
Solomon's carriage was built with the finest materials, yet what lingers is the strange phrase "paved with love." You expect stone or cedar. Instead, love is the floor beneath the king's bride.
What are you walking on today? Ambition, fear, obligation? The place where the Beloved carries you home is paved with something softer, and stronger, than all of it.
The watchmen who go about the city found me; I said, 'Have you seen him whom my soul loves?'"
She is desperate, asking strangers about the One her heart aches for. Notice she does not ask directions or safety. Only Him. When did you last love someone so much that everything else in the conversation became background noise? That is how she loves. That is how He is worth loving.
By night on my bed, I sought him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but I didn't find him."
She reaches across the sheets, and he isn't there. Love creates that ache, the empty space beside you when the beloved is missing. Notice she doesn't stay in bed and sulk. The next verses show her rising to search the streets.
When God feels absent, will you lie still and hope the feeling passes, or will you get up and go looking? Sometimes love is measured by what we're willing to leave the bed for.
