Proverbs 3

The Explanation

Proverbs 3 is written by a father to his son. You can almost hear him say: "Listen, my child, I want to tell you something important." He is not giving a lecture. He is passing on what he has learned about life with God.

He begins by saying: don't forget my teaching, keep my commandments in your heart. Why? Because they bring you a long and good life. Then comes a beautiful line: "Let not kindness and truth forsake you. Bind them around your neck." It is as if kindness and truth are a necklace you always wear. People see it. God sees it.

Then follows perhaps the most famous verse of this whole chapter: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." That is not a small saying. That is a whole way of living.

The father continues. Don't think you are wise all on your own. Fear the LORD, meaning: take God seriously, have deep respect for Him. Honor God with your possessions, also with the first of what you earn or receive. And then something surprising: when God corrects you, don't get angry. He does that because He loves you, just as a father corrects his own son.

The middle part of the chapter is a song about wisdom. Wisdom is worth more than silver, more than gold, more than rubies. Whoever finds wisdom finds life. And listen to this: with wisdom God Himself made the earth. The heavens, the deep seas, the clouds with dew, all made through wisdom. So when you seek wisdom, you are seeking something that belongs to God's own way of working.

At the end come practical instructions. Don't withhold good from someone if you can help them. Don't say "come back tomorrow" if you can give today. Don't secretly plan evil against your neighbor. Don't quarrel without reason. Don't envy the violent person, even if he seems to succeed. Because God sees who really lives with Him and who does not.

What Does This Mean?

This chapter is about trust. Real trust. The father is saying to his son: you can figure a lot out yourself, but you are not big enough to steer your own life completely. God is bigger. God sees further. When you trust Him, He guides your paths.

And wisdom is not the same as being smart. You can get high grades and still be foolish. Wisdom means: knowing how life really works, because you know the God who made life.

The Common Thread

The New Testament says something amazing about Jesus. Paul writes that in Jesus "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Do you remember that wisdom helped make the world? John says the same thing about Jesus: through Him all things were made.

So when Proverbs 3 tells you to seek wisdom, it is pointing forward to Someone. Jesus is wisdom in a person you can know. Trusting the LORD with your whole heart, that is exactly what Jesus asks of His friends. He does not lean on His own understanding either. He always did what His Father wanted, even when the path led to the cross.

For You

Trusting God with your whole heart sounds beautiful, but it is hard. Especially when you don't understand something. When your grandmother is sick. When something at school goes wrong. When your parents argue. Then your own understanding shouts: "This is not right! I have to fix it myself!"

Trusting does not mean you feel nothing anymore. It means you dare to say: God, I don't get it, but I believe You see further than I do. Show me the way.

And that piece about kindness and truth as a necklace? Try it this week. Wear them like a piece of jewelry no one can see, but everyone notices. Be honest, even when a lie would be easier. Be kind, especially to someone no one else pays attention to.

Lord, You are wise and I am still learning. I don't understand everything, and sometimes I want to figure it all out myself. Teach me to trust You with my whole heart. Help me to be kind and honest, also when no one is watching. Thank You that Jesus is Your wisdom, and that I may know Him. Amen.
