The Explanation

Imagine someone standing on a hill, right where all the roads meet. She is not whispering. She is calling out loud, so loud that everyone walking by can hear her. Her name is Wisdom, and in this story she talks like a real person with a real voice.

"Listen!" she calls to everyone who passes by, kings and farmers, children and old men. "What I say is true. Nothing crooked comes out of my mouth." She is not selling cheap tricks. She promises real treasure, better than silver, better than gold, better even than rubies that sparkle in the sun.

Wisdom says kings need her to rule well. Princes need her to make fair decisions. Without her, even powerful people would only make a mess. She hates pride. She hates lies. She loves people who love her, and she promises that anyone who searches for her will find her.

Then Wisdom tells a story about herself, and it is the most surprising part. Before the mountains were even standing. Before there was one single drop of water in the sea. Before the earth had any dust to be dusty with, she was already there. When God stretched out the sky like a tent and drew a circle on the ocean so the water would stay in its place, Wisdom stood right beside him. Not far away, not hiding. Right by his side, like a craftsman working with him, laughing with joy while it all came together.

At the very end, Wisdom calls out one more time. "Listen to me, my sons. Watch at my door every day, like someone waiting outside a gate." She warns that ignoring her is dangerous. "Whoever finds me finds life," she says. "But whoever runs from me is only hurting himself."

What Does This Mean?

Here is the exciting part: God was not confused when he made the world. He did not build it randomly. Wisdom was standing right there next to him, delighting in every mountain, every ocean, every star. That means the whole world is not an accident. It is wise, on purpose, planned with joy.

And this Wisdom is not far away and hard to reach. She stands at the gate, on the street corner, calling out loud to anyone who will listen. She wants to be found.

The Common Thread

Long before Jesus was born, wisdom was already standing beside God, helping shape the world. When Jesus later spoke about the world and about his Father, he spoke with that same wisdom. Jesus once said that wisdom is proved right by what she does. He is the one who was with God from the beginning, full of truth, hating lies, calling people to life. When you listen to Jesus, you are listening to the very voice Proverbs 8 describes.

For You

You do not have to guess what is wise and what is foolish. Wisdom is calling out loud, right where you can hear her, in your Bible, in church, in the words of people who love God. So listen for her. When you are tempted to lie, remember that Wisdom hates lies. When you have a choice between something shiny and something true, choose true. That is worth more than gold.

Dear God, thank you that your wisdom is not hidden. Thank you that Jesus shows us what is true and good. Help us to listen when wisdom calls, and to choose what is right, even when something else looks shinier. Amen.
