1 Chronicles 19
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
King David had a friend. His name was Nahash.
Nahash died. His son Hanun became king.
David thought, "I will be kind to Hanun." So David sent his men. They went to say, "We are sorry your father died."
But Hanun's helpers whispered bad things. "Do not trust them," they said. "They are spies!"
That was not true. But Hanun believed it.
Hanun grabbed David's men. He cut off their beards. He cut their clothes short, very short.
Then he sent them home. So sad. So ashamed.
What Does This Mean?
David heard what happened. His men felt so embarrassed.
David was kind. He said, "Stay in Jericho. Wait there. Wait until your beards grow back."
He took care of his sad friends. He gave them time to heal.
But Hanun was scared now. He knew David would be angry.
So Hanun paid soldiers to fight for him. Many, many soldiers. With chariots too.
They came to fight against David's people.
The Common Thread
David sent his commander Joab to fight. Joab was surrounded, enemies in front, enemies behind.
But Joab was not afraid. He said to his brother Abishai, "Be strong. Be brave."
Listen to what Joab said. "We fight for our people. For the cities of our God."
Then he said something important. "May Yahweh do what seems good to him."
Joab trusted God with the battle. Not just his own strength.
And God helped them win! The enemies ran away, fast, fast.
David fights for his people, just like Jesus fights for us. Jesus is not afraid of anything either. He keeps his people safe too.
For You
Sometimes people are unkind to us, even when we are being kind.
That happened to David's men. It hurt.
But David did not leave them alone. He took care of them.
God takes care of you too. When you are sad, he sees you.
When things feel scary, you can say what Joab said. "God, do what seems good to you."
That is a brave thing to pray.
Talk About It
Have you ever been kind to someone, but they were unkind back? How did that feel?
Joab said, "Be strong, be brave." When do you need to be brave?
Praying Together
Dear God,
Thank you for taking care of your people.
When I feel scared, help me be brave like Joab.
Help me trust you, just like he did.
Amen.

What others discovered
David's men had been shamed, half shaved, their clothes cut off, sent home humiliated. He could have called them straight back to court. Instead: "Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return."
He gave them time. He did not rush their healing or ask them to pretend it had not happened.
Where in your life have you been told to hurry past a wound? Some things grow back slowly, and the King is not impatient with you.
David sent men to comfort a grieving son. Hanun listened to suspicious advisors instead, and "took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away." Comfort mistaken for a threat. Ask yourself honestly: whose kindness have you refused lately because you assumed a motive that was never there?
When the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David..." Notice the order. First they insulted David's kindness, then panic set in, then they threw silver at the problem. A thousand talents to hire an army because they couldn't say, "We were wrong." How often does pride cost you more than repentance ever would?
Joab faced enemies on two fronts, Arameans behind and Ammonites ahead. He didn't panic. He divided his forces, gave his brother the harder side, and stepped forward: "So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Arameans; and they fled before him."
Sometimes courage looks like simply drawing near to what frightens you most. What are you avoiding today?
