1 Kings 16

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Long ago, Israel had kings. One king, then another. Then another.

King Baasha sat on his throne. He did not listen to God. Not at all.

God saw it. God always sees.

God said, "I see what Baasha does. I will not let this go on."

Baasha died. His son Elah became king instead.

But Elah did not listen to God either.

One night, a man named Zimri came to the palace. He took the throne away.

Only seven days, Zimri was king. Just seven.

Then soldiers came to get him. Zimri ran into the palace. He set it on fire, with himself inside.

The fire burned high. The smoke went up into the sky.

After that came Omri. He built a whole new city, on a hill. He called it Samaria.

Then Omri's son became king. His name was Ahab.

Ahab married a woman named Jezebel. She loved a false god, called Baal.

Ahab built Baal a house too, right in Samaria. He bowed down to it.

But Baal cannot see. Baal cannot hear. Baal cannot do anything at all.

What Does This Mean?

So many kings, so fast. Palace after palace. Throne after throne.

Not one of them stopped to listen to God.

Every single one did what he wanted, not what God wanted.

And every time, God saw it. Every single time.

God is not far away, watching kings from behind a cloud. God is right there, close, seeing everything that happens on the earth.

The Common Thread

All these kings forgot God. But God never forgot His people.

Even when the kings were bad, God kept speaking. He sent Jehu the prophet with words, real words, straight from God.

God was still watching over Israel, even in the fire, even in the sad, hard years.

One day, God would send someone better than all these kings. Someone who would always listen to God. That someone is Jesus.

Jesus never built an altar to a false god. Jesus always did what His Father asked.

For You

Think of your own house. Your own bed, your own door.

Ahab built a big house for a god made of wood. But that god could not even blink.

Our God does not live in wood. Our God hears you, right now, even quietly, even at night.

You can talk to Him. He is listening.

Talk About It

Which king listened to God in this story?

Why can a made god like Baal not hear or help anyone?

Praying Together

Dear God, so many kings forgot You. But You never forgot Your people. Thank You that You see me too. Thank You that You hear me when I talk to You. Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 28

Omri slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria; and Ahab his son reigned in his place."

Omri built a capital, forged alliances, made Israel a name among the nations. Yet Scripture buries him in a single sentence. What he passed on to his son was not his success but his sin.
