Daniel 8

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)

Bible

The Explanation

Daniel had a dream. A big, strange dream.

He stood by a river. The water went by, quiet and cold.

Then Daniel saw a ram. It had two horns, tall and strong.

The ram pushed this way. He pushed that way. Nobody could stop him.

Then something ran fast. A goat, from far away.

The goat had one big horn. He ran at the ram, angry and quick.

Bang! The goat knocked the ram down. Right down to the ground.

The goat grew very big. Very proud.

But his horn broke. Four new horns grew instead.

From one horn, a little horn grew. It grew, and grew, and grew.

It did bad things. It knocked down stars. It stopped good gifts to God.

Daniel watched. His heart was pounding.

What Does This Mean?

Daniel did not understand his dream. Not one bit.

He wanted to know what it meant.

Then he heard a voice. It called a name. "Gabriel."

Someone shining came close. He looked like a man, but not quite.

Daniel was so scared. He fell down flat on his face.

The shining one spoke gently. "Understand, Daniel. This is for later days."

Daniel felt sleepy, so sleepy. He fell down again.

But the shining one touched him. Softly. And helped him stand up.

The Common Thread

The ram fell. The goat fell too.

Kings can seem so big and strong. But they do not stay forever.

Only God stays. Only His plans stay.

Even the little horn, so proud, will one day be broken.

Not by hands. Not by swords.

God breaks proud things His own way.

Long after Daniel, God sent someone stronger than any king. His name is Jesus.

Jesus does not fall down. Jesus stays forever.

For You

Did the ram and the goat scare you a little?

That is alright. Daniel was scared too.

But look, someone came to Daniel. Someone kind, who helped him stand.

God sends help when you are scared too.

You can whisper His name in the dark. He hears you.

You do not have to understand everything. Daniel did not either.

He just kept trusting. And got up the next day.

You can do that too.

Talk About It

Have you ever had a dream that scared you? What did you do?

Who helps you stand up when you feel scared, like the shining one helped Daniel?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Some things are big and scary.

Thank You that You are bigger.

Help me when I am scared.

Take my hand, like You took Daniel's.

Amen.

Insight Editorial on verse 4

The ram pushed west, north, south, and "there wasn't any who could deliver out of his hand." Unstoppable, until verse 7, when the goat trampled him and no one could deliver the ram. Whatever looms over you right now, looking permanent and untouchable, has an end date already written. God is the only one who truly does according to his will.

Insight Editorial on verse 11

Notice what the horn went after first: "it took away from him the continual burnt offering." Not the great feasts, the daily one. Morning and evening, the ordinary rhythm of a people saying, we are still His. What gets stolen from you is rarely dramatic. It's the quiet daily prayer that slips, unnoticed, until the sanctuary feels empty.
