Jeremiah 14

Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-5)

Bible

The Explanation

No rain fell. Not one drop.

The ground was dry. So dry it cracked. Little lines, like puzzle pieces.

Children were thirsty. They ran to find water. They looked in the big stone jars.

Empty. So empty.

They walked home again. Their jars were empty. Their faces were sad.

Out in the field, a mother deer had a baby. But there was no grass. So she left, looking for food.

Wild donkeys stood on the hills. They opened their mouths wide. Panting, like a tired dog. Their eyes hurt from looking for green leaves. But there were none.

Everything was dry. Everyone was sad.

What Does This Mean?

The people talked to God. Jeremiah said the words for them.

"We did wrong things," they said. "We are sorry."

They remembered something true. God is the one who saves. God is always near, even in hard times.

"Don't leave us," they said. "You are right here with us."

But some men were saying wrong things. They said, "Don't worry! No hard times are coming!" But that was not true. God had not told them to say that.

God was sad about this. Very sad.

"My eyes cry," God said. "Day and night, I cry."

God cried for his people. Like a papa crying for his children.

The Common Thread

The people said something important. Do you know what it was?

"You are Yahweh, our God," they said. "Only you can send rain. Not any statue. Not anything else. Only you."

That is true about everything. Only God can help when things are truly broken.

Later, God sent someone bigger than rain. He sent Jesus. Jesus came to fix the biggest broken thing of all. Not dry ground. Broken hearts.

Jesus never told lies, like those wrong prophets did. Jesus always tells the truth. And Jesus never leaves.

For You

Have you ever been really thirsty? So thirsty your throat feels scratchy?

Water is a good gift. Rain is a good gift. God gives them.

When something feels hard, you can say what the people said. "Help, God. We need you."

You do not have to pretend everything is fine. God already knows. You can just tell him.

And he stays close. Even in dry, hard days, he stays close.

Talk About It

Have you ever waited for something and it felt like a very long wait?

What could you say to God on a hot, dry day with no rain?

Praying Together

Dear God,

Thank you for water. Thank you for rain.

When things feel hard, stay close to me.

You are the only one who can truly help.

Amen.
