Revelation 6
Explanation and Bible story for toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3-6)
The Explanation
It was quiet on the island. Waves splashed against the rocks.
There sat an old man. His name was John.
And then John saw something. Heaven went open!
He saw a big, shining chair. A throne.
And in front of the throne stood a Lamb.
A little Lamb, soft and white.
The Lamb had a book. A rolled-up book.
It was closed tight. Nobody could open it.
Nobody? Yes. The Lamb could.
The Lamb opened it. And a voice rumbled like thunder.
"Come and see!" said the voice.
And John saw a horse. A white horse, running.
Then another horse. A red one, red as fire.
Then a black horse. Then a pale, gray horse.
The horses ran and ran over the whole earth.
And where they came, things went wrong.
People fought. People had no bread.
People cried. John saw it all.
It made John's heart very sad.
Then John looked down, under the altar.
There were people who had loved Jesus very much.
They called out loud. "How long? How long, Lord?"
And they were given clothes. Long, white, clean clothes.
"Wait a little longer," God said to them. "Just a little longer."
Then the ground began to shake. Boom.
The sun went black. The moon went red.
The stars fell down, like little figs from a tree.
Plop, plop, in the wind.
And everybody ran to hide. Behind rocks. In caves.
Big kings and strong soldiers. Rich people and poor people.
They were so afraid.
What Does This Mean?
But wait. Look once more, very carefully.
Who was holding that book?
The Lamb. The little Lamb held it in his hands.
Not the horses. Not the darkness.
The Lamb opened the book. Nobody else.
So nothing happens that the Lamb does not know about.
Not one horse. Not one star.
The Lamb holds everything.
The Common Thread
And do you know who that Lamb is?
That Lamb is Jesus.
Jesus knows about crying. He cried too.
Jesus knows about hurting. He was hurt too.
And Jesus heard those people calling, "How long?"
He heard every word.
Jesus does not forget them. Never.
He gave them white clothes. And He says: I am coming.
One day Jesus comes back. Then no more crying.
Then the sad things are over.
For You
Sometimes you are scared too.
Maybe at night, when your room is dark.
Or when grown-ups talk about scary things.
Then you may whisper one name. Jesus.
He hears you. Really.
And He is holding the book. He is holding you.
You do not have to hide behind a rock.
You may come to Him, close, like a lamb to the shepherd.

Who was holding the book? Can you say his name?
Praying Together
Dear Jesus,
You are the Lamb.
You hold everything in your hands.
I am scared sometimes.
Will you hold me too?
Thank you that you hear me.
Amen.
What others discovered
How long, Master, the holy and true, until you judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?"
These are martyrs under the altar, and their cry surprises me. Not "forgive them," but "how long?" Heaven allows this question. You are allowed to ask it too. God does not shame the wounded who wonder when justice will come. He hears every whisper from under the altar.
I saw when he opened the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became black as sackcloth made of hair, and the whole moon became as blood."
The sun wears sackcloth. Creation itself puts on mourning clothes, the same rough cloth people wore when their hearts were breaking. Even the sky grieves what human hands have done.
When your world shakes and the lights you counted on go dark, remember: this is not God losing control. This is God pulling back the curtain. What felt permanent was always held in his hand.
