Titus 2

The Explanation
In the Bible there is a man. His name is Paul. Paul writes a letter. The letter is for his friend Titus.
Titus lives far away, on an island. On that island live many people who follow Jesus. Titus helps them. He tells them about God.
Paul writes: "Dear Titus, tell the people how they can live nicely for God."
He writes about grandpas and grandmas. They may be wise and kind. He writes about moms. They love their children. They love their husband. He writes about dads. They do what is good. And he writes about children. And about the helpers in the house.
Everyone gets a little turn. Everyone is important. Big people and small people.
What Does This Mean?
Paul says something very special. Listen carefully.
He says: God is so good. So very good. God gave us a big present. The present is Jesus.
Jesus came to the earth. Jesus came for you. And for me. And for everyone.
Because Jesus is so good, we want to be good too. Not because we have to. But because we are so happy. Happy with Jesus.
It is a bit like this. When mom gives you a big hug, you want to hug back. That is how it goes with Jesus. He loves us. And then we love back.
The Common Thread
Paul writes something beautiful about Jesus. Listen.
Jesus once came to the earth. As a little baby. In a stable. You know that story.
But Paul says: Jesus is coming again. One more time. Not as a baby this time. But as the great King.
We are waiting for Him. Just like you wait for your birthday. It is coming. For sure.
And when Jesus comes, everything will be good. No more crying. No more sad. Only happy. Forever and ever.

Do you know what is nice? You may already do it.
Be kind to your little brother. Or your little sister. Share your cookie. Give grandma a kiss. Listen to mom and dad.
That is not hard for God. God helps you. Every day.
And when it does not work out? When you were grumpy? Then you may say: "Sorry, God." And God says: "It is okay. I love you. Try again."
You do not have to be big. You may just be small. God sees you. God knows your name.

That older men should be temperate, sensible, sober minded, sound in faith, in love, and in patience." Notice patience comes last, like the final exam. Years can leave a man brittle, or they can leave him sound. No one drifts into a gentle old age. What you feed today is what you will be then.
But say the things which fit sound doctrine." Paul had just described teachers whose words were empty. Now he tells Titus to speak what fits. Not louder, not cleverer, just fitting. And what follows isn't a list of doctrines but a list of lives: older men, younger women, workers. Healthy teaching wears clothes. Does yours fit you today?
He gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works." Notice He did not buy you back to leave you standing where He found you. He wanted you eager, not merely obedient. Ask yourself honestly: is there any good work you do with that kind of hunger?
Paul tells Titus that older women should "likewise be reverent in behavior, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good." Notice what he assumes: your life is already teaching someone. The younger women are watching how you carry sorrow, how you speak of others, what you reach for when you're weary. Your ordinary Tuesday is a classroom. What are you teaching?
