The Explanation
Listen carefully. In the Bible there is a book. It is written by a man named Zephaniah. That is a difficult name. Say it: Ze-fan-ja. Very good.
Zephaniah tells about a city. The city was called Jerusalem. Many people lived there. But the people did wrong things. They forgot God. They did not listen. God was sad about that. Very sad.
Zephaniah said: God sees everything. God sees when you are kind. And God sees when you do wrong.
But then, then something wonderful happens. God begins to sing. Yes, really! God sings a song. A song about His children.
What Does This Mean?
Listen to what God says in that song. God says: "Do not be afraid. I am with you. I am a hero who saves you."
And then comes the most beautiful part. God says: "I am so happy with you. I sing about you. I am glad."
Can you imagine? God sings. Like a daddy sings for his little baby. Softly, warmly, full of love. That is how God sings for His children.
The people had done wrong things. They were sad. They were scared. But God said: "Come back to Me. I love you. I forgive you."
The Common Thread
God kept His promise. Long, long after Zephaniah, Jesus came. Jesus is like a big, strong arm around you. Jesus takes away everything that is wrong. Jesus makes you clean, all clean.
And do you know what? Jesus loves you too. Very much. When you are with Jesus, God sings about you. Really. God is glad, because you belong to Him.
For You
Sometimes you are scared. Maybe in the dark. Or when Mommy is far away. Or when you did something you did not want to do.
Then you may listen carefully. God whispers softly: "I am here. I love you. Do not be afraid."
God does not sing loudly, like a shouting song. God sings softly, like a hug. You cannot hear it with your ears. You feel it in your heart. Warm, and safe.
You may sing back too. A little song for God. About the sun. About your teddy bear. About Mommy and Daddy. God listens. God is glad.
And when you did something wrong? Tell God. God says: "Come here. I love you still." Just like Mommy or Daddy, but even more.

Notice where this song sits. Just verses before, Zephaniah has thundered about wrath and ruin. Then, suddenly, singing. God does not wait for perfect circumstances before He hands you joy. He commands it while the ashes are still warm, because His presence, not your situation, is the reason.
The book that opens with judgment closes with God singing. "He will rejoice over you with singing." Notice who holds the tune. Not you straining to praise him well enough. Him, quietly singing over you, the way someone hums over a child who has cried herself to sleep.
"He will calm you in his love." When did you last let yourself be sung over?
I will remove those who rejoice over your misery." Notice what God takes seriously. Not only your sin, but the shame piled on you by others, the voices that enjoyed your fall. He does not tell you to toughen up. He clears the room. The mocking will not have the last word over your life. His singing will.
