God is close and keeps you
God stays close
Four short Bible moments for children, based on Psalm 145:18, Philippians 4:4, 1 Samuel 16:11 and Psalm 121:3.
☀ The morning moment
Yahweh is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
Psalm 145:18 (WEB)
In simple words: God is close to everyone who talks to Him. When you call out to Him with your whole heart, He is right there.
Picture your best friend living right next door. You just have to shout over the fence and they hear you. That is how close God is to you this morning.
While you pull on your socks, while you gulp down your breakfast, while you look for that one shoe under the couch, God is near. You do not have to yell loud or use big fancy words. A simple 'Hi God, please help me today' is enough.
Maybe there is a spelling test today, or a friend you had a fight with yesterday, or a game at recess you feel nervous about. Whisper it to God on your way to school. He leans in close and listens.
✦ The lunch moment
Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, “Rejoice!”
Philippians 4:4 (WEB)
In simple words: Paul says: be happy in the Lord, always! And just to be sure you heard it, he says it twice: be happy!
Have you ever noticed how someone tells you something twice when they really mean it? Like when your mom says, "Don't forget your bag. Really, don't forget your bag!" That's exactly what Paul does here. He says "Rejoice!" and then says it again.
Rejoice just means: be happy, cheer up, smile inside. Paul says you can do that because God is near. Even on a normal Wednesday, in the middle of the week, with schoolwork and a half-eaten sandwich.
Maybe the morning was a bit tough. Maybe someone was grumpy at you. Paul's word bounces back like a little ball: rejoice! God is with you at this table, at this desk, right now.
That's a nice thought to take into the afternoon.
✩ The afternoon moment
Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
1 Samuel 16:11 (WEB)
In simple words: The prophet Samuel asked Jesse if all his sons were there. Jesse almost forgot David, the youngest, who was outside with the sheep.
Imagine you are the youngest in the family. Maybe your big brother gets to stay up later. Maybe your sister rides her bike to places you cannot go yet. Sometimes it feels like nobody notices you.
That is exactly how it was for David. Seven brothers stood in a line inside the house. David was left out in the field with the smelly sheep. His own dad almost forgot him! But God did not forget. God sent Samuel to find him.
God knew David by name, out there under the sky. He knows you too, right where you are this afternoon. Not the loudest, not the biggest, not the oldest. Just you. He sees you.
☾ The evening moment
He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.
Psalm 121:3 (WEB)
In simple words: God keeps you safe. He never falls asleep. While you sleep tonight, He stays awake and watches over you.
Have you ever tried to stay awake really late? Maybe on a sleepover, or when you were too excited to close your eyes. Sooner or later, everyone falls asleep. Even the strongest person you know needs to rest.
But God never gets tired. Not once. While your house is quiet and your pillow gets warm under your cheek, He is still there. Watching. Listening. Loving you.
So you can let today go now. The homework, the little argument at lunch, that thing you forgot. God is holding all of it. And He is holding you too. You are safe. You can close your eyes.
