Thankful Hearts, Faithful God
Thankful hearts
Four short Bible moments for children, based on Psalm 118:1, Proverbs 27:17, 1 Samuel 3:9 and Psalm 121:8.
☀ Morning moment
Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.
Psalm 118:1 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Say thank You to God, because He is good and His love never stops, not even for one day.
The alarm goes off, your feet hit the floor, and already there is cereal to eat and a backpack to find. Mornings can feel rushed, like everything is happening at once.
But before the rush really starts, you can stop for just one second. You can think about God, who was already awake before you, who is good, and whose love for you did not run out overnight. It is still there, fresh as your breakfast, ready for this exact Thursday.
Your turn
Maybe today there is a test, or a friend you are not sure about, or just the normal walk to school. Whatever it is, God's love goes with you into it. Before you leave the house, say one quiet thank You to God for something good, even something small like warm socks or a friend who waves at you.
✦ Lunch moment
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance.
Proverbs 27:17 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Just like one piece of iron makes another iron sharp, a good friend helps you become better.
Think about your lunchbox for a second. Maybe someone swapped you a cookie for your crackers, or you shared your sandwich because your friend forgot theirs. Little things like that make a day better.
Friends are a bit like iron rubbing against iron. When you play together, talk together, even disagree sometimes, you help each other grow sharper and kinder. A good friend tells you the truth, cheers you up when you are sad, and laughs with you at silly jokes.
Your turn
After lunch today, say one kind or encouraging thing to a friend, something that helps them feel stronger or happier.
✩ Afternoon moment
Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down. It shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
1 Samuel 3:9 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Old Eli taught young Samuel what to say if God called him again in the night: just answer, I'm listening.
Maybe you just got home from school and your head is still full of noise, homework, the playground, someone's loud laugh. It is hard to hear anything quiet in all that noise.
Samuel was a boy who slept in the temple. One night he heard his name called. He did not know it was God, not at first. Old Eli had to help him understand. Then Samuel just said, I'm listening, speak.
God still speaks to children today, sometimes through a quiet feeling, sometimes through someone's kind words, sometimes through a Bible story. You do not need fancy words back. You can just say it like Samuel did.
Your turn
Tonight, before you fall asleep, whisper quietly: I'm listening, speak.
☾ Evening moment
Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Psalm 121:8 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: God watches over you when you go out to play and when you come back home, today and always.
Think about everything you did today. You went out the door this morning, maybe to school, maybe just into the garden. You ran, you talked, you laughed, maybe you fell down once. And now here you are, back home, in your pajamas, almost ready for bed.
God was there the whole time. Not just watching from far away, but walking right beside you, like a dad who never lets go of your hand. He saw you at school, He saw you at the table, and He sees you now, tucked under your blanket.
Your turn
God does not stop watching when the lights go out. He stays awake all night, so you don't have to. Tonight, whisper one thing to God that happened today, something good or something hard, and let Him hold it while you sleep.
