God Gives Joy and Rest
Joy and Rest
Four short Bible moments for children, based on Psalm 5:11, Proverbs 12:18, John 6:11 and Matthew 11:29.
☀ Morning moment
But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you.
Psalm 5:11 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Everyone who trusts in God can be glad. God protects them, so they can sing and shout with joy.
You pull on your socks, grab your bag, maybe forget your lunchbox on the table again. Mornings go fast. But right before you run out the door, think about this: God is not rushing. He is already awake, already watching over your whole day.
Think of your favorite goalkeeper, standing ready, eyes on the ball, hands up. That is a little like God today. He is not far away in the sky, He is close, ready to catch you if something goes wrong at school, on the bus, or at break time.
Your turn
When you know someone strong is on your side, you can walk taller. You can laugh louder at recess. You can try the hard math problem without shaking. Today, tell one person goodbye with a big smile, because you know God is going with you.
✦ Lunch moment
There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
Proverbs 12:18 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Mean words can hurt like a sharp cut. But kind words can heal, like a bandage on a sore spot.
Think about lunch today. Maybe someone made a joke that stung a little, or maybe you said something sharp without even thinking. Words can do that, they fly out fast and land hard, like a little poke.
But words can also be medicine. A simple "that was a great goal" or "you can sit with me" can make someone's whole day feel lighter. You have that power in your mouth, right now, this afternoon.
Your turn
So before this day is over, choose your words like a doctor choosing the right treatment. Say one kind, healing thing to someone at school or at home before you go to sleep tonight.
✩ Afternoon moment
Jesus took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down; likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.
John 6:11 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Jesus said thank You for the food, then shared it with everyone. Nobody went home hungry that day.
Maybe today someone forgot their snack at school, or you shared your chips with a friend at the table. That little moment is a tiny echo of a much bigger one.
A huge crowd sat on a hill with Jesus, and there was almost no food at all, just a few loaves and two small fish. Jesus did not panic. He held up that little lunch, said thank You to God, and started handing it out. And somehow it was enough. More than enough.
You might wonder how that worked. It is okay not to know. What you can know is this: Jesus notices when people are hungry, tired, or left out, and He cares about small things too.
Your turn
Share a snack or a toy with someone today, without being asked.
☾ Evening moment
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:29 (World English Bible (WEB))
In simple words: Jesus says come close to Him and learn from Him. He is kind and gentle, and with Him your heart can really rest.
Your week at school is done, your bag is by the door, and your pajamas are soft and warm. Maybe your legs are tired from running at recess, or your eyes are heavy from drawing and reading all day long.
Jesus says come to Him, because He is gentle and kind. He does not want you to carry everything by yourself, not the hard spelling test, not a silly argument with a friend, not even the little worries that pop up right before sleep. With Him you can finally put it all down and just rest.
Your turn
Before you close your eyes tonight, whisper one thing that felt heavy today to Jesus, and let Him hold it for you.
